dear nathaniel, there numerous nurseries in ooty whichh offer some very rare and exquisite plants.i seriously consider it among the top three places in india for plant hunting(the others being bangalore and kolkata)... but you will really have to hunt. the agricultural show at PUSA in delhi hosted by the IARI will have many varieties of fruit trees to offer (mostly india's best). also, i do not mean to be intrusive as it is your personal choice, but in todays time the need of the hour is 'sustainable' gardening. it is advisable to grow trees which are not dependent on artificial irrigation (such as you have suggested) as water is no longer considered a renewable resource (global water reserves have reduced by 50% in the past 60 years) and it seems times to come won't get any better. there are many tree varieties which perform very well without articial watering (bambax, ceibea, adansonia, acacia, emblica etc.) the best way to find out is to find varieties which can sustain themselves on your geographical location(taking factors such the rainfall and teperature into consideration). to save the environment going green alone is not enough, sustaining our environment for generations to follow is the need of the hour. happy gardening i hope you find what you're looking for. | |||
