Dinesh, I had a long discussion with Navendu Paage on precisely this issue. It has confounded me too that we see stamens exserted sometimes, and sometimes we don't see them. Some sources give M. exserta as a synonym of M. pubescens, where exserta refers to the anthers being exserted. My feeling is that this species has many forms which were initially thought to be different species, but later combined into M. pubescens. However, this is just my conjecture. Also, I remember Navendu telling me that the stamens being exserted or not, doesn't constitute an identifying feature of M. pubescens. I will be very happy if an expert can throw more light on this issue. |
