This is a picture of Chromoelina odorata (Kehimkar, book on wild flowers of India) syn. Eupatorium odorum. The veination of leaves can be used to distinguish between this and Ageratum conyzoids even when not in flower. Besides the rays of the latter are more compact. I have seen Eupatorium odorum flowers in various shades of blue-violet to almost white in different parts of West Bengal and Orissa.

Thank you very much, S. Basu (can I know your name, please?).
The distinguishing key was very helpful.

While at this genus, would you (and all other friends at forum) please take a look at this photograph below and validate whether it is Eupatorium rugosum (White Snakeroot).

(click on photo to reach at Flickr site, if you want see it in larger sizes)

Thanks once again for Chromolaena odorata.
Dinesh.

Thanks S.Basu for your enlightening post. Somehow the flowers in the picture in Kehimkar's book seemed to have a pinkish tinge, and I assumed that they are pinkish.  But indeed, other sites show white flowers.
Interestingly "Flowers of Sahyadri" does not list this common weed. So, did Ingalhalikar mistake it for Goat Weed?

Dinesh, the leaves in the last picture of yours have three main veins along the length of the leaf. This doesn't agree with the leaves of Eupatorium rugosum. On the other hand, this feature agrees with your two pictures of Chromolaena odorata.

Dinesh,

Thanks for correcying my erroneous spellings. I am Susmita Basu from Kolkata. Can you,Tabish, or any other plant-;over using this website let me know the name of the publisher of "Flowers of Sahyadri" or "Further flower of Sahyadri" ? I haven't come across any copy of either in the bookshops I frequent in Kolkata. I would like to know any synonyms of Eupatorium rugosum, could'nt find it in the "Flora of India" Vol 12 (dealing with Asteraceae, published by BSI).
Regards
Susmita

"Flowers of Sahyadri" and the other one are both published by the author Ingalhalikar himself,  under the name
Corolla Publications
12, Varshanand Society, Anandnagar, Sinhagad Road, Pune 4111 051.
The problem with his books is that they are simply not available in other states. You can't find it in Delhi too.

Eupatorium rugosum is a synonym of the currently accepted name: Ageratina altissima
It is native to North America. It is possible that it is not found in India at all, which might explain its absence from "Flora of India".

Hi Susmita,

Publishers of both the books Flowers of Sahyadri, (Rs. 395) and its continuation Further Flowers of Sahyadri (Rs. 800) are Corolla Publications of Pune.
(I am 100% certain that any of your favourite book dealer will get it for you upon request).

Ageratina altissima could be the current name; synonyms being Eupatorium rugosum and Eupatorium urticaefolium

3) Dave's Garden

Friends, please come in and correct me; I have simply searched and compiled information from WWW.

Regards,
Dinesh.

"Fastest fingers first"

Dinesh, we responded to Sushmita's post together. My post appeared first because you wrote a longer and a more detailed one.

Thanks Tabish and Dinesh. I think it might be ordered from Kolkata.
