dear readers,

lets face it, if we love nature...then why are we harming it ???

a few days ago i read in the papers that the populaton of native and supposedly common birds has started to decline at fast rate; specially in the NCR(Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad).. this is a cause for concern. sparrow populations have been reported to have gone down to less than half by a leading newspaper.

A prominent reason stated for this tragic phenomena particularly in the NCR is due to chemical pesticides and a passion among delhites for exotic plants ...the article touched me greatly because it is a fact that we have started to get obsessed with the exotic. The usage of chemical pesticides and fertilisers occur not only in the garden but also in our homes, agriculture and offices. we use chemicals such a DDT, Rogur, liquid Sulphur, phenyl much too liberally.

we've come to a point where many native speceis of flora and fauna are being overlooked for "short-cuts" in our lifestyles and our exotic obsessions.

It is an earnest request that we do the needfull for our environment by growing/exploring options of native species which are endemic to our region alongside our exotic collections. some of the most superb specimens of flora are native or even endemic to various parts of the Indian sub-continent. this not only attracts native wildlife such as birds and many other creatures but also helps to support flora which have been listed as endangered.

we need to avoid chemical pesticides and fertilisers which damage the eco-system.Organic is way. Water bowls too support wildlfe.

a Native Garden involves the cultivation of those species which are either native, endemic or naturalised to our geographical regions. thus creating mini eco-sytems for local species to prosper.

like organic gardening, Native gardening too has become a crucial aspect of gardening the world over wherever the environment is at stake.

if anyone has anyone suggestions for native gardening please do post them..
