WOW! this topic touches my heart. The beautifull and enchanting tulip.Well pankaj, tulips will grow and flower well in dehradun, provided you take good care of them and protect them from the summer heat and the monsoon humidity; both of these factors are vary major factors for tulip mortatlity in India(thats why despite the low temperature tulips do not do well in the highlands of the south). try and get 'species tulips' and not the 'fancy' varieties as 'species' type are much more hardy than the 'fancy' ones. They need a period of dry rest and they need manuring before planting and after flowering. it is better to add manure ateast a week before plating the bulbs. Direct contact with manure is not advisable. over-watering is like poison for these 'natives of the middle-east'. make sure that before planting and before storing the bulbs you treat them with some kind of fungicide as they are prone catching fungus. in delhi the bulbs usually do not flower more than once, and therefore are discarded. I hope you have better luck in dehradun. bulbs can be easily sourced from ARGOSY, at chanakyapuri in delhi. it might be a good idea to plant them in the begining of autumn or once the the last frost has passed in dehradun, as this is also the general practice in most parts of europe and north america (this allows the bulb to have enough time to mature after flowering in spring but much before the summer heat kills the plants).eventually when the palnts dies down the bulbs are lifted from the ground(you need to reduce watering before doing this). Some species tulips can be left in the ground aswell, but the challenge is to find them from somewhere. best of luck!!! do update me about the progress. ciao | |||
