Well, there is a recent book, Isaac Kehimkar’s The Book of Indian Butterflies. If you can get hold of it, it might give you a good overview.

There is a site on Indian birds, with mind-blowing pictures www.indiabirds.com, by Vijay Cavale. The site is non-commercial.
You can start exploring it from the following page:
http://www.indiabirds.com/content/BirdGallery.asp?Bird_SortID=8&pageno=1&totalphotos=439

A site on butterflies of India is sorely needed. There are lots of people who have taken good pictures of butterflies, but a comprehensive and well-organised site is missing. We need a person with a drive, web-designing skill, time to spare and aesthetic sense (in that order ) I could not find any person around me, with all the qualities.

There are yahoo groups on butterflies of india, wildflowers of india, birds of india by Cavale] etc but they are not in the same format as this site, neither are they particularly interesting, more a place where you can post queries etc.  You can contact Balakrishnan Vallapillai through flickr, he has perhaps the best knowledge of  Indian butterflies and certainly the best collection of photographs.  You can also contact Isaac Kehimkar through flickr or Yahoo butterfly groups or contact Krushnamegh Kunte through Yahoo butterfly groups.
